The jewel in the Cumbrian crown is the Lake District with its 850 square miles of protected parklands, mountains and lakes, making it the UK’s first and largest National Park. The National Park Visitor Centre is located at Brockhole, midway between Ambleside and Windermere. It is a magnificent house set in 30 acres of terraced gardens and a must on any visitor’s list.
At the heart of the National Park is Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England at 12 miles long and 220 feet deep. One of the best views of it and the mountains beyond is from the terrace of The Beech Hill Hotel that most certainly occupies one of the most superior locations on Windermere’s eastern shore.
The surrounding landscape highlights the beauty of the seasons, coloured in the Spring with hues of purple and yellow from bluebells and daffodils, verdant greens in the Summer, gold, red and orange splendour in the Autumn and snow-capped peaks in crisp Winter light.
Cumbria isn’t all just beautiful lake and mountain scenery. It is liberally dotted with charming Lakeland towns, villages and is rich in history. In the days when the industrial North was at its greatest and most successful it was to the Lakes that the wealthy merchants from cities like Manchester headed, building gracious homes around the lakesides, many of which have been converted to hotels offering visitors a warm Lakeland welcome in spectacular settings.
The area surrounding The Beech Hill has long provided some of our most illustrious writers and poets with inspiration that is familiar the world over, none more so than William Wordsworth. It was also a holiday home for Beatrix Potter and the museum dedicated to her little characters that have entertained children round the world for generations is a magnet for visitors and within easy driving distance of the hotel.
Arts and crafts, parks and gardens, wildlife and nature, history and heritage, sports and leisure pursuits – it is all to be found around Lake Windermere, ensuring that there is never a dull moment for any visitor, regardless of age.
