The lake has a single island called imaginatively The Island and the waters are navigable for all unpowered vessels.
The lake gives its name to the village of Grasmere which is a very quaint and picturesque and an extremely popular tourist destination.
The annual Grasmere Sports take place in August and commenced in 1852, this is the main event in the village’s calendar and sports include Cumberland wrestling, fell running and hound trails.
Sarah Nelson was the original maker of the famous Grasmere Gingerbread, made to a secret recipe kept within the family to this day. The shop remains in the former village school, adjacent to St Oswald's Church. www.grasmeregingerbread.co.uk
