Happy New Year! or should that read Happy New Wifi!

I really don’t know where 2014 has gone.  I’m not sure if it’s because I’m getting older but the years seem to disappear faster every time?!  Anyway, I hope you’ve all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

We’ve had an interesting twelve months with lot’s going on at the Beech Hill, but I think the thing that’s really made a difference to you our guests, is the long awaited upgrade of our Free Wi-Fi! If you’ve stayed with us before and you’re reading this you’ll probably be jumping with joy about now, understandably so!

This has been something we’ve been working to achieve for many years, we’ve tried every solution on the market to make the best of what was available in the remote area that we reside in.  (Just to fill you in on a little of the detail a standard broadband line in to the hotel gave us 1 mb/s download and 0.8 mb/s upload which was pretty bad especially when you consider it had to be shared out.)  This has even included banding extra lines together to help download speeds and this last year we tried Satellite Internet which was great for download speeds but the latency (response delay) was 100 times slower than standard broadband, we even got our local MP Tim Farron on the case to chase fibre broadband roll out in the Lake District, to say we were very frustrated with situation would definitely be an understatement.

Anyway I’m delighted to tell you that now even in the heart of the Lake District, we have fibre broadband! In short the Wi-Fi connection and speed is amazing…. This service is as always, currently available in our public areas, however we have plans to upgrade the system and this will allow full Wi-Fi services in all our bedrooms too.

Once this is possible, we can then move our plan even further forwards which means moving from the conventional paper guest compendiums to a tablet format. This will give our guests instant access to a whole range of services and facilities, you’ll be able to check out local walks, read through our range of special events and even make your next reservation, all from the comfort of your room!

Exciting times ahead, and we’ll be sure to keep you posted on our progress, in the meantime, I would like to wish you all the very best for 2015!

Christmas Attractions- By the Light of the Fool Moon at Muncaster Castle

If you happen to be staying with us over the festive period, you will be keen to discover some Christmas related activities to get you in the yuletide mood and keep those you are travelling with, entertained along the way.

One great Christmas activity happening in the local area, is a festival called; By the Light of the Fool Moon, taking place at Muncaster Castle in nearby Ravenglass, in Cumbria. Featuring live music and performances, By the Light of the Fool Moon is a thrilling display of entertainment, set in the stunning rooms of Muncaster Castle.

The theme of the collection of performances, centres around the idea that a full moon hasn’t occurred at the castle, for five centuries. As legend goes, the full moon should it happen, would spark a series of curious events. A Professor has arrived at the castle to uncover the dark tale. Join him in his quest to discover Muncaster’s deepest secrets.

By the Light of the Fool Moon is directed by Tom Spencer, leader the of multi-award winning play Fine Chisel. He is accompanied by a cast of experienced and talented actors and the performance features an original musical score.

The musical composition featured, allows us to experience the human voice in an a new and innovative way.

Similar to many of these events, audiences gather at a focal meeting point, in this case the castle’s pop-up Christmas bar, before being led away on a top secret tour, of the passages and corridors of the castle, normally not open to the public. The show ends with a merry feast in the great hall, where you can relax and discuss your take on the fabulous night.
