Situated in the historic port town of Whitehaven, The Rum Store is a truly unique, not to be missed experience.    Once through the doors you will leave behind the technology driven culture of modern- day England and be transported back to the tropical paradise of the 18th century Caribbean jungle, where you will begin your nautical journey through the Rum Story.

The journey traces the origins of Whitehaven’s sad involvement in the slave trade and its transportation of men and women from villages in Africa to the Antiguan sugar plantations, where they were made to work for wealthy landowners. The stories are filled with tales of morally bankrupt pirates, waring aristocrats and all the customs and cultures of the day. You can experience the legendary punch houses, and see how gangsters operated their illegal pubs and bars in an age of jazz and corruption. The stories all link back to Whitehaven and the Jefferson family who played an integral part in the maritime exploits of the day, as well as preparing and selling their exquisite rum.

The Rum Store is a great twist on the traditional museum experience and kids will love it! Last admission is at 15.30 and ticket prices range from Adult £5.45, concession £4.45, child £3.45 and family £16.45.

The Courtyard Cafe provides a menu full of home-made nutritious snacks and lunches. There is also a great little gift shop where you can pick up unusual quirky gifts and of course sample some of the famous 1785 Jefferson’s rum.

Here’s a date for the diary, all you car enthusiasts; April 25th. The last week end in April is when the city of Carlisle will host it’s famous Pirelli Carlisle Rally. For almost a quarter of a century the city has been home to this high speed, high thrill sport.  The event attracts some of the sports biggest superstars, all of whom are looking to blaze a trail of thunder through the historic Lakeland city. The high-speed action packed display is a must see for all petrol heads.

The rally really does bring the community together, with young and old residents alike lining the streets to catch a glimpse of celebrity drivers and to cheer on the gasoline-guzzling mean machines. It really is a colourful celebration of all things petrol-powered. The backdrop could not be more scenic, as the race sets off in full of view of Carlisle’s old town Hall.

The Pirelli Carlisle Rally is the only rally which has been a part of the official British Rally Championship since its beginnings. With the cancellation of this years British Championship, due to a last minute loss of contracts with the rally’s main promoters and despite no other rally of its type in the pipeline until 2016, Pirelli Carlisle will still go on as planned, but with a slightly different schedule than in previous years. The city will host a couple of other major series shows this year, including a round, rather than a whole event, of the British Historic Rally Championship, featuring a host of iconic rally cars from days gone by. There will also be a round of the R.A.C. Rally Championship, a National series set to bring in crowds of passionate spectators.

The Pirelli Rally takes place on April 25th in Carlisle city centre for more information goto  www.pirellicarlislerally.co.uk

The-Theatre-by-the-Lakeblog

Despite its isolated unspoilt country surroundings, the Lakes are still a hot bed of art, comedy and live shows. Plenty of the UK’s top entertainers visit this part of the country each year, entertaining locals and tourists alike at some of the UK’s most beautiful venues. While you are staying with us this spring, you might want to check out some of the acts performing at the Theatre by the Lake, namely the award winning comedian and star of a number of top-rated TV comedies; Dave Spikey.

Can a joke still be funny when you have been given the punchline beforehand? That is Dave Spikey’s million dollar question, that he ponders throughout his latest show. He revisits all the old classics, from nuns in the bath to Prince Charles’s fur hat and delivers the quips with the style and flair of a comedy heavyweight. A delightful mix of observational humour and nostalgic one liners, Spikey will have you in stitches from start to finish. If you are coming with kids please bear in mind the show is recommended for the over 16’s only. Tickets are priced £15 and the show is on April 23rd.

Also on the schedule in the near future at The Theatre by the Lake, are local band Water’s Edge, performing soulful ballads and upbeat dance floor numbers on April 15th. The legendary 80’s soul singer and former Culture Club backing singer Ruby Turner performs on April 12th and Scottish folk duo Phil Bain and Ally Cunningham are there on April 13th.

Theatre by the Lake is in Lakeside in Keswick. You would be hard pushed to find a more idyllic and stunning location anywhere in England.  There is also a great range of food on offer in the relaxing downstairs bar and cafe. Theatre by the Lake can offer you everything from smooth blended coffee to two course dinners, before an evenings show. Open between 10 am and 11pm on performance nights, the cafe is a great place to relax before or after your show and you can even take an evenings stroll by Derwentwater, just a minute away.
