Walking Windermere

It is not surprising that the Lake District has been voted the top walking destination of 2006 by members of the Ramblers Association. From rough rocky climbs and mountain paths to short strolls around the lake there is something for all ages and ability. Together they offer an insight into the beautiful landscape that the Lake District has to offer.

Details of all walks in the area are available in the lounge for your perusal and here we have featured some of our favourites. Packed lunches, picnic baskets and route maps are all available from reception in preparation for your walk. We offer a complimentary clothes drying service for those odd, unavoidable rainy days!

  • Walking Ambleside to Stockghyll Force

A pleasant but short walk to a beautiful waterfall. This charming footpath, which runs alongside the river, takes you uphill through the trees to various view points of Stockghhyll Force, a picturesque 18 metre cascade in a tree-lined rocky ravine.
  • Walking Grasmere Garden Centre to Loughrigg Terrace

A gentle climb with delightful lake views. This walk begins around the lake shores with a short climb to Loughrigg Terrace, where you will be amazed at the magnificent views of Lake Grasmere and the surrounding fells. A descent through the woods leads you back to the Lake shores.
  • Walking Keswick

A very easy stroll along the route of the old Keswick railway beside the scenic, wood-lined gorge of the River Greta.
  • Walking Bowness to Hill Top

Ideal for families, this lovely walk through quiet countryside includes a ferry trip, two country pubs and a chance to visit Hill Top, the home of Beatrix Potter. Along the way you come across various view points, a kissing gate as you pass through larch woods and a choice of spots to lunch before a leisurely stroll down a quiet lane and along the shore line leads you back to Windermere Ferry.
  • Walking Windermere to Orrest Head

An invigorating climb through a lovely wood to a popular local view point. The footpath takes you alongside a stone wall and over a stream to Orrest Head summit, where you can enjoy the panoramic view and use the view finder to identify the surrounding mountains.
  • Walking Ambleside to High Sweden Bridge

A more strenuous walk which is worth it when you see the magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. This uphill climb takes you through the woods and across an old pack horse bridge, where the views open out to the Langdales and Fairhurst. On your descent you will follow a path which runs alongside a stone wall and beck, with Langdales and Loughrigg visible until you reach Ambleside.
