Kerrie Hutton takes a cheeky break in the Lake District...

I am at an age now (it pains me to say) where if my husband and I get a weekend off from the kids we go to the Lake District and not Ibiza. And so it was that we headed off on the M6 from London to discover Lake Windermere in late October.

It’s a bit of a trek for just two nights away but the terrible motorway traffic is forgiven the minute you set eyes on the beauty of the lakes.

We were staying at the Beech Hill Hotel and Spa in Windermere, which has a lovely old-fashioned country feel. The hotel is positioned by the lake and the views from the restaurant and lounge are incredible, while the staff are helpful and attentive.

We headed out immediately to the jetty at the bottom of the hotel grounds hoping for a short walk along the lake’s edge before darkness.
