Explore the Lake District

48 hours in Windermere: a relaxed itinerary for your first visit

Two days around Windermere can be enough for a satisfying first visit, provided you resist the temptation to see the whole Lake District at once. Choose one main outing each day and let the rest of the time unfold around it. You will spend less of your break looking for parking and more of it enjoying where you are.

This suggested itinerary works as a starting point rather than a timed tour. Swap the days around for the weather, check current attraction opening times and book anything you particularly want to do.

Arrival evening: settle in before setting out

Leave your first evening simple. Unpack, have something to eat and decide what you would most like from the next day. If you are staying at Beech Hill, explore the bar and lounge and check dining arrangements before arrival.

Make practical decisions now: where you will leave the car, how you will get to your first stop and whether you need a ticket. A little preparation prevents your only full morning disappearing into travel planning.

First full day: see Windermere from the water

Start with a lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises publishes routes from piers including Bowness, Ambleside at Waterhead and Lakeside. Pick a departure point and a route that fit the time you have.

A return sailing keeps the day straightforward. If you prefer to get off and explore, check which ticket allows that and confirm the return service before leaving the boat. Do not assume the final sailing runs at the same time throughout the year.

Afterwards, keep some time for Bowness. Browse at your own pace and choose lunch when you feel ready rather than building the day around a string of reservations.

Second day: choose one place to explore

For art and design, consider Blackwell. For boating history, investigate Windermere Jetty Museum. Both give your trip a different perspective on the lake.

If the weather suits an outdoor visit, look at Fell Foot instead. Check the visitor information for the part of the site you want to use and choose an outing that leaves enough time for your journey home.

Leave room for a slower moment

A short break need not become a checklist. An afternoon tea, a booked spa appointment or an evening with a lake view can be as much a part of the holiday as a day out. Confirm appointments and access arrangements before counting on them.

Beech Hill is approximately four miles from Bowness, so plan transport between the hotel and town rather than assuming a walk. Explore our rooms and suites and directions when putting your two days together.
